Boxley Garden Party

Our annual Garden Party, held in the delightful grounds of Parsonage Farm, was an extraordinary success.  Friends of Boxley Church organized this event, on a sizzling Saturday in August, to enable fun, togetherness – a bit of excitement on the ‘guessing’ stalls and some energy expended on line dancing and hoola-hooping  - but mostly to raise money in an extremely enjoyable way. Those who preferred to remain cool, while watching the exuberance of others, were able to do so from the shade of the tea tent.  There they could choose from a variety of tempting home-made cakes to go with their cuppa or the more adventurous could decorate their own cup-cake at a nearby stall.  Here are three happy party visitors.

Just a week later Friends of Boxley Church were enthusiastically involved in our Flower Festival that spanned the last weekend in August to 1st September.  A dedicated team of ladies (with some help from a few gents) devoted a tremendous amount of time, effort and much inspiration to make our Church glorious in floral splendour.  The theme for the displays was ‘A walk through Boxley Church’ and, rather intriguingly, pairs of shoes, each sporting a flower arrangement, guided our steps from lychgate to porch.  Once inside, the sight and perfume of these masterpieces of floral art, was stunning.

It was from these dazzling surroundings that the Home Grown Entertainment sprung.  To some ‘home grown’ might intimate second rate, but this was far from the case on the Saturday evening, mid flower festival.  We were treated to solo performances on violin, guitar, flute, bassoon and a ukulele skit, interspersed between a scene from Phantom of the Opera that starred an angel with huge wings held in place by a flashing belt buckle and an excerpt from River Dance that brought a comely Irish colleen, with a mass of flaxen tresses and  moustache, into the limelight.  Excellent solo singers, the joint choirs of Detling and Boxley as well as hand-bell ringers received much applause. The finale was an audience participation sing-along of well-loved songs.
